orrington read-a-thon: Postpones until 2021
Our Reading Eagles Read-A-Thon will not take flight until after the new year. We will put 2020 behind us, and let the Eagles rest their wings and eyes over break. Stay tuned in 2021!
Holiday outreach to teachers and staff
Sharing holiday cheer with teachers and staff is entirely optional but always appreciated. Given the pandemic, the PTA is recommending that caregivers reach out by email to individual teachers and staff members to inquire about mailing cards or other items. A few suggestions this year to keep things simple:
- Cards or drawings done by students can be photographed and shared over email with teachers and other staff.
- Emailed gift certificates are contact free.
- Many teachers have already established Amazon Wishlists with items that will benefit their whole classroom.

PTAs Across d65 vote to join one fund
The Orrington community voted resoundingly in favor of joining One Fund, the PTA Equity Project’s initiative to pool and redistribute PTA fundraising more equitably so that all Evanston children will benefit from more robust PTA funding. We are so pleased to announce that we are joining all other D65 PTAs in this collaborative effort. One Fund passed unanimously across District 65!
Many details need to be worked out over the next few months regarding One Fund’s implementation, but this is a time to celebrate a major milestone for the Evanston Community. We are at the vanguard of this kind of effort nationwide, and a tremendous amount of community-wide effort went into getting us this far. Now that we have crossed that finish line as a unified community, the next phase of the work begins.
At Orrington, we will need to fundraise as successfully as we always have (or BETTER!), while we recommit to volunteer efforts within Orrington itself. There is work to be done at Orrington that requires people-power, as we strive to make attending Orrington a welcoming, affirming experience for all children and families. The PTA looks forward to engaging with the entire Orrington Community in this work!
school-wide communication information moving to website
Family communication is essential to our students’ success. All information regarding our Flyer Connect app, our school-wide directory through AtoZ Connect, our Facebook page, and our grade-level Slack channels (coming soon) can be accessed in the Communication section of our website. Any questions should be directed to email@example.com
volunteers are always needed!
We are still looking for some fun loving caregivers who would like to be Community Connectors. Community Connectors have replaced the role of room parents. Community Connectors will embrace the diversity and richness of the Orrington community by working together in grade-level teams to make connections, support teachers, build community and unite families and students. Each grade-level group will organize at least one (virtual) community-building event this year. We are looking for volunteers for first grade, fourth grade and fifth grade!
If you are interested in volunteering as a Community Connector (or in any capacity) please enter your information HERE and someone will reach out to discuss this or other current open PTA POSITIONS you have interest in. The 2020-21 school year will be like no other and we need volunteers more than ever to help us build community during this uncertain time.
