PTA membership votes to join One fund
At Wednesday evening’s virtual PTA meeting, the Orrington community voted resoundingly in favor of joining One Fund, the PTA Equity Project’s initiative to pool and redistribute PTA fundraising more equitably so that all Evanston children will benefit from more robust PTA funding.
The attendance at the 11/18 meeting was astounding. 108 people voted virtually by ballot, with nearly 93% choosing to join the One Fund, continuing the Orrington PTA’s track record of supporting the initiative wholeheartedly. Our PTA has collaborated on and shared funds with PEP since its inception--in fact 2 of PEP’s founding members are Orrington parents and PTA members.
The Covid Relief Fund established by PEP in the Spring of 2020 exemplifies Orrington PTA’s embrace of PEP’s all-of-Evanston philosophy. Our PTA Executive Board voted unanimously to contribute 75% of our reserves--$47,495--to the relief fund that grew to surpass $500,000 used to support more than 700 Evanston families during that crisis. Some Orrington families were supported by this contribution, but our shared dollars helped Evanston families and children district-wide get through that difficult time.
Our community’s overwhelming vote to support One Fund means our Orrington community will need to fundraise as successfully as we always have (or BETTER!), while we recommit to volunteer efforts within Orrington itself. There is work to be done at Orrington that requires people-power, as we strive to make attending Orrington a welcoming, affirming experience for all children and families.
Our dollars at Orrington will be fewer, so our efforts will need to increase to meet that change. We will need to donate, fundraise and volunteer like never before, for Orrington and our whole community. Committing to this transformative shift is the right thing for all of Evanston’s children, and the Orrington community has made that commitment powerfully.

Next steps - anti-racism learning studio
Evanston is beautiful, liberal, diverse...and racist. Despite our best intentions, Evanston’s practices and policies disproportionately harm our Black and Brown community. APPLY to The Next Steps Anti-Racism Learning Studio to ORGANIZE and BUILD truly anti-racist Evanston schools. In our third year of programming with the District 65 community, Next Steps is using an application and cohort model. We invite diverse and demographically representative school teams and individuals to apply by December 9. For the application and more information, visit http://www.NextStepsEvanston.com. Please complete this form https://forms.gle/NVdN2TkGCia1AbEi6 if you would like to be a part of an Orrington Next Steps team.

directory emails sent again today! please take a look!
Orrington PTA is using an online directory, hosted by AtoZ Connect, to manage family contact information. We are trying to have a complete directory so our community can connect with each other this year!
Those families who agreed to release their information when registering with District 65 are already included in the Directory and received an email earlier this week--from Orrington PTA--to verify their information. Check your inbox! You must verify the information before it is released into the directory.
If you did not agree to release your information and would like to be included in the Directory, click this link: https://atozconnect.com Please fill in as much or as little information as you would like to be listed in the Directory. There is room for multiple addresses, phone numbers and email addresses if you would like them listed.
If you have any questions, please contact Sonia Kinra at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you!
boxes of stories across evanston
Boxes of Stories are bins of FREE books available for D65 students all over town! There are multiple book bins in front of Orrington, full of great books. Some of our Orrington books are now at Fleetwood Jourdain (1655 Foster St). They are on a shelf outside the main entrance during business hours and are being re-stocked regularly. We would like to thank Mr. Dorsey at Fleetwood Jourdain for his help!
Please come take a look at Orrington or Fleetwood for books to read--there are books across every reading/interest level! We are always accepting book donations--and we really need them again! If you have books your children are no longer reading, please donate them so another D65 student can enjoy them! Please leave donated books in the “To Be Sorted” bin at Orrington. There is also a bin at Fleetwood.
volunteers are always needed!
We are still looking for some fun loving caregivers who would like to be Community Connectors. Community Connectors have replaced the role of room parents. Community Connectors will embrace the diversity and richness of the Orrington community by working together in grade-level teams to make connections, support teachers, build community and unite families and students. Each grade-level group will organize at least one (virtual) community-building event this year. We are looking for volunteers for first grade, fourth grade and fifth grade!
If you are interested in volunteering as a Community Connector (or in any capacity) please enter your information HERE and someone will reach out to discuss this or other current open PTA POSITIONS you have interest in. The 2020-21 school year will be like no other and we need volunteers more than ever to help us build community during this uncertain time.
