District 65 Equity Walks

Dear District 65 Families,

Last spring, Superintendent Goren and the Board of Education unveiled a comprehensive plan to further equity in District 65 schools. This plan includes the adoption of a racial and educational equity statement; training and professional learning opportunities for administrators, faculty, and staff to inform culturally relevant teaching, learning, and curriculum; creation of a District Equity Leadership Team and an Equity Advisory Committee; and the completion of “equity walks” in schools.

For the 2016-2017 school year, I am excited to have joined the District 65 team as a consultant and to help with this important work. I will be spending time in each of the district’s 18 schools - walking through the buildings, talking with the adults and students, and hosting family/community meetings during the day and evening to examine policies, practices, and procedures through a racial equity lens. These visits will take place throughout the school year and more information will be forthcoming from the school administration.

The voices of students, staff, families, community members, and decision-makers are essential to this process. Collectively, these voices will inform future equity initiatives and policy in District 65. I’ll also make recommendations, provide training to raise awareness about systems of oppression and our intersecting identities as well as co-facilitating the inaugural SEED (Seeking Educational Equity & Diversity) seminar for staff.

As a product of Evanston/Skokie School District 65 and District 202, I am deeply committed to this work and am proud to be a member of the District 65 family. I started out teaching Spanish at ETHS and went on to teach in Tokyo and Singapore. Over the years, I’ve worked with immigrant and refugee families as well as traditionally underrepresented parents in helping them learn how to navigate the school system here in the USA. For the past three years, I was the Director of Equity and Niles North ELL, leading efforts to close the “gap,” eliminate the racial predictability of student achievement and address disproportionality in District 219 - one of the most diverse high school districts on Chicago’s north shore. I am a founding member of the Illinois Coalition of Educational Equity Leaders and since 2008 I’ve presented on a variety of topics at numerous conferences across the United States.
