District 65 Celebrates LGBTQ+ Equity Week

September 24, 2019

District 65 Community -

In District 65, our shared commitment to create an inclusive environment for members of all identities is unwavering. During the week of October 7, we will celebrate LGBTQ+ Equity Week in District 65. Efforts are supported in partnership by the District Administration and District 65 Educators’ Council (DEC) and are aligned with our district equity goals. Students and educators will engage in a week-long curriculum that celebrates and affirms LGBTQ+ identities with the goal of fostering a deeper sense of allyship within our schools and the creation of a welcoming, inclusive environment for every child and adult. We are deeply appreciative of District 65 educators and members of the district’s Gender and Sexuality Educators Alliance (GSEA) for the many hours they spent this summer developing robust, thoughtful, and age-appropriate curriculum for use in D65.

Did You Know…

70% of youth have been bullied at school because of their LGBTQ+ identity? This work is about encouraging our students to feel safe and feel seen. To feel valued and capable of growth.

LGBTQ+ Equity Week honors National Coming Out day on October 11, a day that commemorates the National March on Washington For Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987 as well as the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. We also recognize that LQBTQ+ Equity Week coincides with the end of Hispanic Heritage Month. While our students are participating in activities and lessons to connect with the rich culture of the Hispanic/LatinX community as part of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, we also look to elevate the intersectionality of LatinX and LGBTQ+ identities. Throughout the week, students in pre-k through eighth grade will broaden their understanding of identity of self and others, allyship, family structures, vocabulary, gender expression, stereotypes, colors on the intersectional pride flag, and the historical contributions of LGBTQ+ people. All content has been developed to ensure that it is both developmentally and age-appropriate for all students. Click here to view curriculum and lesson plans.

As you may know, this summer Governor Pritzker signed House Bill 246 requiring all schools to include LGBTQ+ history in its curriculum by July 2020. As a district, we are excited to be prepared to bring this to our students, staff, and families in 2019. To further support this work, the District 65 Equity Department is partnering with Lurie Children’s Hospital to provide training for all staff in supporting students and staff who are LGBTQ+, transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming, in accordance with Board Administrative Procedure 7:10. More information can be found in this one-page document.

We look forward to partnering with our staff and families in LGBTQ+ Equity Week to honor and affirm the diversity of our community. If you have questions, please contact your child’s school. Thank you for your continued support of our students and schools.

Sincerely,

Meg Krulee, DEC President

Phil Ehrhardt, Interim Superintendent
