2019 Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR)

Dear District 65 Families,

 

From March 11-April 26, third through eighth grade students across District 65 and the State of Illinois will participate in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). As you may know, IAR replaces the PARCC assessment. IAR is aligned to the Common Core Standards. It is designed to provide teachers and families with information about student progress. Over the next two years, the state anticipates that schools will receive test results much quicker and is working toward an adaptive assessment that will provide a better understanding of where each individual student is in their learning.

 

The format remains the same and the majority of students will take the test online. Accommodations will be made for students as part of their Individualized Education Program (IEP). To provide flexibility, each school will develop its own testing schedule. Our test coordinators are working diligently in preparation and we anticipate a smooth testing experience.

 

While IAR, overall, is slightly shorter in length, several of our schools have been selected at random to participate in required field testing. This will actually increase the length of the English Language Arts portion of the test for participating schools by 75-90 minutes (depending on student grade level). Our district appealed this decision at the state level, yet we were informed that we are required to participate.

 

State and federal laws require District 65 to administer IAR. If fewer than 95% of students participate, we stand to lose millions in federal funding. As always, our team will remain respectful of students who refuse to take the assessment.

 

We continue to hear concerns regarding student assessment. Assessments are valuable tools for looking at student growth and tailoring instruction to meet the needs of students, and yet, they are not the only way to assess student development. Our curriculum and instruction department is working alongside educators and principals to carefully review and improve our assessment tools in an effort to limit the impact assessments have on instructional time.
