Transportation

We know the ride to and from school is an important part of the day for our students. Our team works closely with our transportation providers and families to provide safe and efficient service for our students.

We strongly encourage walking or biking to school whenever possible and encourage our families to utilize our Safe Routes to School. District 65 bus service is provided by a local company, Positive Connections.

Important Updates to Transportation Policy

On February 23, 2026, the Board of Education approved updates to Policy 4:110 Transportation that clarifies eligibility and aligns our practices across all schools and programs. This follows several discussions over the past year.

District 65 policy remains aligned to school code and takes into consideration safety guidelines as well as the long-term financial impact of transportation services beginning in FY27 and beyond. Current transportation services will continue as usual for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year.

Students who attend a school based on a permissive transfer are not eligible for transportation unless it is written into their IEP.

For the 2026-2027 school year, D65 will provide free transportation to K-5 students and K-8 grade students at King Arts who:

  • live 1.5 miles or more from their assigned local (home) schools; or

  • live within 1.5 miles from school; and where walking to or from school would constitute a serious safety hazard based on approved Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and board-approved hazardous crossings including Chicago Avenue, Gross Point Road, or Ridge Avenue; or

  • have transportation as part of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP); or

  • are English Learners (EL) enrolled in bilingual education programs not located in their local (home) school.

Important Note:

The information in these tabs is current for the 2025-2026 school year and will be updated soon to reflect the School Board's updated transportation policy.
