D65 Parent University: Sustainability Series

In the Fall 2023, the District's Family and Community Partnerships team and Sustainability Coordinator collaborated to host a 3-part sustainability series for caregivers to learn more about District 65's sustainability efforts. The District 65’s Parent University - The Sustainability Series three-part series covered lunchroom composting, school gardening and outdoor place based family learning.  We socialized and offered a light dinner 5:30 - 6 pm, program from 6-7 pm.  Encouraged caregivers and families to attend one or all sessions, light dinner and childcare were available.

In February 2024, we hosted an additional Winter Event with  Learning in Places.

Caregivers and community members were invited to join us to explore an exciting approach to supporting your child's education through outdoor, place-based learning that centers culture, equity, and sustainability. During this interactive family event attendees heard from guest speakers from Northwestern and D65 educators. We all also had the opportunity to go on outdoor walks in order to experience the program first hand.

“It's so important for our students to build a sense of agency and a sense of ecological caring and connectedness to nature and for us to help students keep and strengthen that connection over the course of their schooling experience in D65 — the health and well-being of our planet depend on it,” Dr. Alissa Berg, D65 Director of Science, said. “We know D65 families care about ensuring a sustainable future for their children.”
