School Transition FAQ
Approximately 800 District 65 students will be assigned to a new school for the 2026-27 school year. We are committed to ongoing support, collaboration, and transparent communication to ensure that students, staff, and families are cared for and that the transition ahead is as smooth and thoughtful as possible.
We have received questions about next steps and want to make sure those answers are available to all. Frequently asked questions and answers are listed below. These will continue to be updated as we work through additional inquiries.

Enrollment Options
School Assignment Email, Permissive Transfers, Board-Approved Exceptions, Middle School, Dual Language, Re-Registration, and Selective Enrollment
- How do I log into PowerSchool?
- How do I know what school my student is attending next year?
- How do I know which school is the home school for my address?
- Who received a school assignment email? Do I have to respond?
- I have 4 kids in D65. How do I know which file is for which kid and which corresponding birthdate to use to open it?
- Why didn’t I get a letter for my Pre-K student at the JEH Early Childhood Center?
- My child is in a specialized program or school (eg STEP, RISE, ACC, TWI, King Arts, or JEH Early Childhood Center). Can they stay at their current school/program?
- My child is at their current school based on an administrative transfer or permissive transfer. Can they stay where they are?
- Will permissive transfers be accepted after the March 1 deadline?
- If I submitted a permissive transfer request, when will I hear back?
- If my permissive transfer request is approved, do I need to accept it? What is the deadline to either accept or decline the transfer?
- I am requesting a permissive transfer for my child to stay at their current school. Will siblings also be able to attend that school when they enroll in District 65?
- Will the District maximize permissive transfers to ensure as many families as possible are granted their request? What is building capacity in considering these requests?
- Will the District make public the status of permissive transfer requests (such as how many were submitted or approved)?
- Why are some families waitlisted for permissive transfers? Families deserve clear communication and stability.
- When will families who are placed on the waitlist receive an update?
- My child’s assigned school is Foster Elementary based on the current boundaries; however, I would like my child to stay at their current school. Is this possible?
- If my child currently attends Bessie Rhodes but we do not live within the Foster attendance area, can my child attend Foster and stay with their Bessie Rhodes peers?
- Can Bessie Rhodes families choose a different school instead of Foster?
- My child is in fifth grade and part of the TWI program. What are their options for participating in dual language in middle school and how is this a part of the registration process?
- Do families of rising 6th graders need to register AND complete the school assignment process?

Transportation
- If my child is granted a permissive transfer, will they receive district transportation?

- Do K-5 TWI students receive bus transportation to their assigned school?
- If a family requests a permissive transfer from Chute Middle School to either Haven or Nichols Middle School to participate in the dual language program will the student receive bus transportation?
