Dear District 65 Staff and Community,

I am pleased to share the exciting news that Virginia Sulek has been named our new Director of Student Specialized Services and Supports. Ms. Sulek was approved by the School Board at the June 23 Regular Board Meeting and will officially join our team on July 1.

With over 31 years of experience, including 23 years serving school systems as their Director of Special Education, Virginia brings a wealth of knowledge, a deep commitment to inclusive education, and a student-centered approach that aligns with our district’s mission and strategic goals.

Ms. Sulek began her career as both a special education teacher and school psychologist, grounding her leadership in direct experience supporting students and families. For the past four years, she has served as the Director of Special Education in Orland Park School District 135. Over the course of her career, she has led the design and implementation of effective systems for student intervention services; ensured high-quality, compliant Individualized Education Plan (IEP) development and implementation; and introduced collaborative structures that have transformed the way children receive services.

Throughout the selection process, Virginia was highly regarded by our interview panel, which included educators, administrators, and community partners with deep experience in special education. Her thoughtful approach, technical expertise, and genuine passion for students stood out clearly. Panelists appreciated her focus on collaboration and her commitment to building strong relationships across school teams, families, and the broader educational community.

Virginia believes that every child deserves access to a rich and engaging learning experience and is dedicated to fostering inclusive practices that honor each student’s unique strengths. She is also known for encouraging creativity and innovation in classrooms, helping to spark curiosity and engagement among learners of all backgrounds.

Outside of her professional work, Virginia enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the city, and traveling. We are thrilled to welcome her to District 65 and look forward to the many ways she will contribute to the success of our students, especially those who receive specialized services.

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Sulek to the District 65 community. We are excited for what lies ahead as we continue working together—staff, families, and partners—to strengthen services and support for every learner.

With gratitude,

Dr. Angel Turner (she/her)
Superintendent
