Dear District 65 Community -
It was a wonderful first two days of school and we hope you feel the same way! While we are in the waning days of summer, the heat is back! We expect high temperatures and humidity this week and are taking extra precautions to keep all of our students and staff safe and as comfortable as possible despite the predicted heat.
We are especially thankful for our buildings and grounds team who worked to ensure all air conditioners across the district are working properly. This being said, we anticipate that it may still be warm in some spaces throughout the district given the age of our buildings and capacity of some of our cooling equipment.
Heat Mitigation Measures
- Schools will follow inclement weather procedures for arrival and dismissal. Students will be allowed extra time indoors when arriving at school and waiting for transportation after school.
- Recess location will be determined using a weather index chart and guidance from the district office.
- Schools will prioritize the use of air-conditioned spaces and may move classes or activities to other spaces as needed. This may include physical education classes.
- All schools have bottle filling stations and staff will work to ensure students have access to water. Compostable cups will be delivered to schools for those students who do have or forgot their water bottle.
- All outdoor activities will be moved indoors or rescheduled as needed.
Here’s how you can help
- Stay hydrated! We encourage all of our students and staff to bring their own reusable water bottles to school daily.
- Wear light-colored, cool, loose-fitting clothing.
- In air-conditioned spaces, keep the cool air in.
- Avoid opening windows and doors. Avoid strenuous activity and walking long distances if possible.
- Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion/heat stroke.
- We are working with our providers to ensure all bus windows remain open.
We know it will be warm and we ask for your patience and support in the coming days. If you have specific questions, please reach out to your school leaders. We expect the high temperatures to subside mid-week and more seasonable weather to come. Thank you for your partnership.
Wishing you all a joyful and productive week of school!
With appreciation,
Dr. Angel Turner (she/her)
