McGaw YMCA Summer Learning Program

The McGaw YMCA Summer Learning program, in partnership with District 65, is a six-week summer learning experience for students in K-4th grade. This program is designed to help advance students’ academic achievement and social-emotional skills through a full-day summer experience that combines small group, rigorous literacy and math instruction, with hands-on enrichment activities including; STEM, physical activity, art and a weekly field trip.

We believe students need equal access to the high-quality resources they deserve, in order to realize their potential. With the support of our community, this summer experience will help your child be successful at school and beyond!

The McGaw YMCA Summer Learning program will take place Monday through Friday from 8:30am-4:30 pm at Oakton, Washington and Kingsley schools. There will be no program on June 19 or July 4.

Student Selection
Preference will be given to students performing within the 40% to 60% percentile range in reading and/or math. Additional consideration will be given to students eligible for free and reduced lunch. This program caters to students who would benefit from practice and support in meeting grade-level standards. Additionally, students must demonstrate the ability to function effectively in group settings with minimal redirection.

Program Schedule
Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided daily. Weekly field trips will take place on Fridays.

  • 8:30am-9am – Drop-off and Breakfast
  • 9am-12pm – Academic Time (Monday-Thursday)
  • 12pm-1pm – Lunch and Recess
  • 1pm-3:30pm – Enrichment Activities
  • 3:30pm-4pm – Snack and Reflection
  • 4pm-4:30pm – Centers/Recess and Final Pick-up

Program Results
Students who participate in this program gain an average of 2 months in reading and/or math skills over the course of the summer.

Parent/Caregiver Agreements
Great news! This program is available at absolutely no cost for free and reduced-price lunch eligible students who are accepted. To make the most of this opportunity, families and caregivers need to embrace a few commitments:

  1. Regular Attendance: Please make sure your child attends the program every day. We understand life happens, but we ask that students try not to miss more than 2 days over the six-week program. If your child might miss more than that, we kindly request you give another child the opportunity to participate.
  2. Reading Together: We encourage parents/caregivers to spend quality time reading with their child every night. It's a wonderful way to bond and foster a love for learning!
  3. Parent Information Night: To kick things off on the right foot, we invite all parents/caregivers to attend our Parent Information Night during the week of May 13-17. It's a chance to get to know us and learn more about what we have in store.
  4. Open Communication: We believe in teamwork! Parents/caregivers, please keep the lines of communication open with your child's teacher and program leaders. Together, we can ensure the best experience for everyone involved.
  5. McGaw YMCA Policies: Parents/caregivers and students are required to agree to all McGaw YMCA policies including those related to: Child Safety, Health and Wellness, and Code of Conduct.

We're all in this together, creating a positive and enriching experience for your child. Thanks for being part of the adventure!
