English as a Second Language

Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI)

Grades K-8

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a program that serves eligible students from low-incidence language backgrounds. District 65 services students from more than 80 language backgrounds. Some examples of the language groups represented in this program are: Arabic, French, Haitian-Creole, Mandarin, and Swahili.

The program provides support to help students succeed in academic subjects and learn English in the general education classroom and in small groups as necessary. The program provides instruction in the English language using Sheltered English Instruction.

This program is available at the following elementary/magnet schools: Dawes, Dewey, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary & Fine Arts School, Lincoln, Lincolnwood, Oakton, Orrington, Park, Dr. Bessie Rhodes School of Global Studies,  Walker, Washington, and Willard. This program is also available for preschool students enrolled at the Joseph E. Hill Early Childhood Center and the stand-alone middle schools: Chute, Haven, and Nichols.

Grades 6-8

When EB students are in middle school, they are supported through a co-teaching model in which there are two teachers (one content teacher and one multilingual co-teacher) in the classroom. The multilingual co-teacher provides the EB students with extra academic support, assists the content area teacher in modifying curriculum and instructional techniques, and may work with students in small groups to differentiate instruction. This is in addition to the ESL teachers that may pull out newcomer students for specific skills and language development.

These programs are available at Chute, Haven, and Nichols.

If you have any questions about the program or services, please contact your school's ESL teacher directly or Amy Correa, Director of Multilingual Programs and Services, correaa@district65.net.
