ABOUT KING ARTS - Home of the Mustangs!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School, better known as “King Arts”, is one of two K-8 magnet schools serving the Evanston/Skokie District 65 community.  King Arts draws students from all over Evanston and the Skokie Village attendance area, and prides itself on its diversity, as well as being an inclusive and tight knit community of students, parents, guardians, teachers and administrators.   The school consists of 571 students, and within each grade level there are typically consists of three classrooms, each with approximately 20 students, creating the feel of a small school environment.

The Literary and Fine Arts focus of the school was formally adopted in 2011 by the District 65 School Board as a result of its strategic planning process.  While King Arts follows the standard District 65 curriculum, there is a special emphasis on integrating the arts across a wide spectrum of the curriculum and also promoting specific literary and fine arts activities, both during and after the school day.

KING ARTS'S HISTORY

The school was formerly known as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Laboratory School (or King Lab), and since it opened its doors in 1967 as a magnet school and as a leader in school desegregation in Evanston, it has been known for its experimentation and use of best practices to achieve strong educational outcomes for all  its students.  It always has maintained a focus on literary and fine arts as a vehicle for expanding students’ knowledge, expressing creativity, and as an outlet for the unique and diverse talents of students.
