Dr. Angel L. Turner
District 65 Interim Superintendent

Dr. Turner has been an educator and leader for more than 20 years, currently serving as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in District 65. Previously she served in District 65 as the Director of Literacy.

Dr. Turner has kept students at the heart of her career in education, working to ensure that they receive an equitable education and can discover the joy of learning. This has created pathways for improved student outcomes as measured by increases in the areas of Ambitious Instruction, Effective Leaders, and Collaborative Teachers from the most recent 5Essentials Survey. She was also instrumental in the intentional investments made to strengthen the learning environment and overall culture at Haven Middle School.

Her leadership style embodies the district’s “Big Five” pillars, particularly humanization. In her current position working with the school leaders in the District’s 18 buildings, she has modeled humanization in all interactions, allowing staff, guardians, and students to see that empathy, vulnerability, and kindness go a long way.

Dr. Turner's emphasis on relationships and collaboration has led to authentic, valuable partnerships among District leaders, departments, and with the District 65 Educators’ Council (DEC) executive leadership.

“I am a reflective practitioner who engages in the hard work of restoring, repairing and rebuilding trust in relationships, and genuinely cares for people,” she says. “It is the core of who I am.”

Dr. Turner has earned the following degrees:

  • Ed.D in Urban Educational Leadership, University of Illinois at Chicago
  • M.A. Educational Administration, St. Xavier University
  • B.S. Elementary Education, Loyola University

Dr. Turner has been an educator, school leader, and district administrator for over 20 years. Dr. Turner spent three years as the proud principal of Morton School of Excellence in the city’s East Garfield Park neighborhood. Prior to joining the D65 team, she provided school leadership coaching as the Senior Director of Curriculum and Assessment at Accelerate Institute and served as a Principal Supervisor for six years, supporting both elementary and high schools in fostering an intense focus on instructional delivery and leadership development.

She has extensive experience in school leadership, coaching and has worked in several education nonprofits throughout her career. In each new role, she makes it a priority to assess, reflect on, and establish systems that lead toward continuous improvement.

She was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, but grew up on the South Side of Chicago. During her free time, she enjoys being active in her church and spending time with her family and friends.
