Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month 
September 15 - October 15 

This month honors the history and achievements of the Hispanic/Latino/Latinx community. While many state governments and the federal government refer to the month as "Hispanic Heritage Month," the month is also referred to as "Latinx Heritage Month."

Indigneous Peoples Day 
October 10

Honors the past, present, and futures of Native peoples throughout the US. The holiday recognizes the legacy and impact of colonialism on Native communities, and it also celebrates the cultures, contributions, and resilience of contemporary Native peoples. Indigenous Peoples Month falls in November of each year.  

Diwali 
October 24th 

Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.

Dewey Art Collaboration Project

Hispanic Heritage Month - Celia Cruz Tribute

Check out the amazing installation of a tribute to Celia Cruz.  Thank you to the volunteers who shared their time and talent to bring this beautiful piece to Dewey.  Celia Cruz is a Cuban-American singer and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century.  During a career that lasted more than 60 years, Celia Cruz helped popularize salsa music in the United States. By celebrating her Cuban culture, she also helped Afro-Latino Americans embrace their own heritage.

Dewey PTA Financial Update

District 65 Pumpkin Sale Results

The first District wide collaborative fundraiser of the year was a great success.  It was lovely to see people from across our community come together at the Pumpkin Patch we set-up at Dawes.  Many thanks to the several Dewey volunteers that worked to plan and execute the sale.  We raised over $5,000 for D65 PTA One Fund.

DEWEY ACTIVITIES

Volunteer as a D65 Fluency Tutor!

Want to help students during the school day? Volunteer as a fluency tutor with D65! The D65 Fluency Tutor Program is recruiting community members to work with elementary students in first through fifth grade on their reading or math skills. Tutors have fun playing simple games with students, like Bingo and Go Fish, or reading short passages and books together. Students gain more confidence in their skills, and teachers appreciate the additional support. The minimum commitment to the program is 30 minutes a week, during the school day. Tutors meet with the same students throughout the school year, October through May. This opportunity is open to all parents/caregivers and community members, and training is available. ESCCA Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers spend 1-2 hours working with D65 students and families to select clothing and outerwear in the amazing ESCCA store set-up at JEH.  ESCCA needs volunteers to help as a personal shopper from each school. Dewey’s remaining dates are:

Evanston School Children’s Clothing Association (ESCCA) provides school clothing for all Evanston/Skokie District 65 K-8th grade school children in need. Each year ESCCA provides a full wardrobe of clothing and shoes to 700+ children. Our clothing assistance services are performed efficiently and discreetly and always keep the dignity of the families in mind.  Dewey students are able to access this wonderful clothing support service by contacting Ms. Juell, the Dewey Health Clerk, at juellt@district65.net.

The audit committee's purpose is to review the financial transactions of the PTA. The financial experience is a plus, but not necessary! Please reach out to deweyptatreasurer@gmail.com if you are interested. 

Translation Team

Have you ever wondered how we get all of the wonderful translations of the communications from the PTA? They come from a group of volunteer translators. If you’re bilingual in English and Spanish, please join us and help translate! You can sign up for the dates that you want, whether it be once a month or twice a year. All you have to do is use the calendar. It’s that simple!

You sign up for a week at a time. You will receive the English content by Friday evening and the PTA would like it back by Sunday evening, please.

El mes de gentes indígenas cae en noviembre cada año.

Mes De Herencia Hispana - Tributo a Celia Cruz

Vea la asombrosa instalación del tributo a Celia Cruz. Gracias a los voluntarios que nos dieron su tiempo y talento para traer esta bella pieza a Dewey. Celia Cruz fue una cantante Cubana-Americana y una de las artistas más populares del siglo 20. Durante su carrera que duró más de 60 años, Celia Cruz ayudó a popularizar la música salsa en los Estados Unidos. Celebrando su cultura cubana, ella ayudó a Afro Latino Americanos a adoptar su propia herencia.

ACTIVIDADES DE DEWEY

Sea Tutor de Fluidez Voluntario

¿Desea ayudar a estudiantes durante el dia escolar? Sea voluntario de fluidez con el distrito 65! El programa de tutoría de fluidez del distrito 65 esta reclutando  miembros en la comunidad para que trabajen con estudiantes de primaria de primer a quinto grado para ayudarles con lectura y matemáticas. Los tutores se divierten jugando juegos con los estudiantes, juegos como bingo and go, Go Fish, o leyendo pasajes cortos o libros juntos. Los estudiantes ganan confianza en sus destrezas y los maestros aprecian el apoyo adicional. El compromiso mínimo del programa es 30 minutos por semana durante el dia escolar. Los tutores ven a los mismos estudiantes a través del año escolar, de octubre a mayo. La Asociación de Ropa para Niños Escolares de Evanston (ESCCA) provee ropa a todos los niños escolares del distrito 65 (grados k-8) que la necesitan. Cada año, ESCCA provee un vestuario completo y zapatos a más que 700 niños. Nuestros servicios de asistencia con ropa los manejamos de una manera eficaz y discreta, siempre con la dignidad de las familias en la mente.

Alguna vez te has preguntado “¿de dónde vienen todas esas traducciones para las comunicaciones del PTA?” Pues vienen de un grupo de traductores voluntarios. ¡Si eres bilingüe inglés / español, por favor, únete con nosotros y ayúdanos a traducir! Puedes apuntarte para las fechas que quieres ya sea una vez por mes, dos veces por año, lo que sea. Solo hay que usar ese calendario. ¡Es tan simple!

Se apunta para una semana. Recibirás al texto en inglés el viernes por la tarde y al PTA le gustaría tenerlo en español el domingo por la tarde.
