Partnering with parents and caregivers is an important aspect of ensuring student success. It is the collaboration between the school, home, and the community that gives our students the support and confidence to achieve throughout their educational experience. To support these efforts, we mainteain an updated Resource Guide for Families of Children with Special Needs. It is designed to provide you with an understanding of the special education process and procedures.
This manual reflects policy changes brought about by the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) (2004) and the Illinois State Board of Education’s regulations. Major changes include the revocation of consent for services, Response to Intervention (RtI), our increased focus of providing inclusive practices in the least restrictive environment and the expansion of 504 plans since the last re-authorization in 1997/2001.
Questions
Special education administrators are assigned from the Special Services Department to provide technical assistance to local schools. Questions regarding the administration of special education, including eligibility and referral procedures, services to students and placement decisions may be addressed to your special services administrator. However, principals and case managers are significant to the IEP process. Any questions regarding your child’s current Individualized Education Program and services should first be addressed with the case manager and then the principal, if needed, prior to contacting your special services administrator.
