Camp Kuumba

  • Camp Kuumba is a free summer program designed to give Black students of Evanston equitable opportunities to discover themselves and the world around them through their participation in sports, arts, reading, exploration, financial literacy, STEM, and community service projects. The goal of Camp Kuumba is to engage, encourage, and empower our young Black boys and girls to reach their fullest potential.

    • Arts - Opportunities to discover themselves through untapped talents in a wide variety of arts such as drawing, painting, spoken word and more.
    • S.T.E.M. - Fun and engaging experiments and hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and math.
    • Reading - Deeper dives into books that reflect their lives and community with small group discussions that enrich their understanding of the book and themselves.
    • Exploration - Exploration of the many enriching opportunities that exist in Evanston and the Chicagoland area while learning independence by navigating public transportation.
    • Financial Literacy - Real world experiential learning about the concept of compound interest and the importance of investing early and for the long term.
    • Sports - Participation in sports that have far too long been unavailable to them due to equipment costs, club fees, transportation issues or societal expectations.
