Magnet School/Magnet Program/Permissive Transfer Application Process
Only students with a completed District 65 registration are eligible to be selected for the limited school choice options (K-8 magnet schools, magnet programs, or permissive transfer request). To ensure an equitable selection process, the only information used to make selections is what is contained on the application and received through the registration form. For 2013-14 applications are completed and submitted online. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, April 17 to be considered during the first round of selections. Additional selections will be made after June 12th and July 18th. Applications will not be accepted after July 18, 2013.
In the application process, applicants are assigned a random number and chosen by lottery. When making permissive transfer, magnet program, and magnet school selections, consideration is given to gender balance and enrollments at the schools impacted by the selection.
Click here to access the 2013-14 Magnet Program, Magnet School and Permissive Transfer Application. The application is available in Spanish. Fill out the information for each question, using the navigation buttons at the
bottom of the page. There are six questions in total. Click the 'Done' button on the last page once all of the information has been filled out and you will then receive a confirmation message thanking you for filling out the application. Clicking 'Done' on the confirmation message page will route you to our registration website.
Families who receive a selection letter, are given a deadline by which to inform the District whether or not the placement is accepted.
Questions about the application process can be sent by email to parents@district65.net or by calling 847-859-8055/847-859-8056.
Applications for magnet school, magnet program, or permissive transfer are available for families interested in placement for:
- either Bessie Rhodes or King Lab Magnet School
- kindergarten English-speaking students in the two-way immersion (TWI) program at Dawes, Dewey, Oakton, Washington or Willard Schools
- the African Centered Curriculum (ACC) program at Oakton School
- permissive transfer from the attendance area school to another school in the district.
Permissive Transfer
Permissive transfers provide families and children with a choice and opportunity to attend a district school outside the attendance area. Applications are made available in January for the following fall. Only students with complete registrations are eligible to be selected.
Students who attend a school on a permissive transfer are not eligible for district transportation (bus) services. Permissive transfer students must attend on a consistent basis and student attendance is reviewed throughout the school year. Students who are excessively tardy or absent may be required to forfeit their permissive transfer and return to the attendance area school. Families of students entering 6th grade need to reapply.
Magnet Schools and Programs
In order to ensure an equitable selection process, the only information used to make selections is what is contained on the application. Explanatory letters, phone calls, or interviews are not considered. The Board of Education specifies the order of selection preference for magnet schools as:
*students who live within a neighborhood preference area
*siblings of students placed at the magnet school for programmatic reasons
*younger siblings of a student currently attending the magnet school
African-Centered Curriculum Program (Magnet Program)
Families of children entering kindergarten through fifth grade may apply for their child to participate in the African Centered Curriculum (ACC) program at Oakton Elementary School. The ACC program uses the District 65 curriculum, enriched with history and cultural values and traditions from Africa.
Two-Way Immersion (TWI) (Bilingual program for eligible Spanish-speaking students and magnet program for English-speakers who apply). Only kindergarteners are eligible to apply.
Two-way immersion is the bilingual education program model for grades K-5 for Spanish speaking English language learners (ELLs). The program provides instruction in English and Spanish to enhance the academic achievement of ELLs and their English-speaking classmates. TWI classrooms have nearly equal numbers of native English and Spanish speakers. This program, which is open to all Spanish-speaking ELL students is at Dawes, Dewey, Oakton, Washington and Willard elementary schools. Native English speakers are selected through a lottery system from applications received. Washington Elementary School has two TWI classrooms for which approximately half of the TWI English-speakers are selected from outside the Washington
attendance area.
Selection procedures for magnet programs are similar to those for magnet schools. Siblings of students currently enrolled in the program and students residing in the attendance area of the school where the program is operated are given preference in the selection process.
