Truancy Ordinance

CITY OF EVANSTON TRUANCY ORDINANCE
- what parents need to know -
The importance of attending school
Attending school every day is an important part of a successful school experience. Parents and caregivers are responsible for ensuring that their child attends school.
he District understands that there are times when absences are necessary.  Valid absences include cases of illness, observing a religious holiday, death in the immediate family, a family emergency or other situation beyond the control of the student, or circumstances that cause a parent/guardian reasonable concern for the student’s safety or health.  In those instances, a parent/guardian may authorize an absence by notifying the school.

reventing truancy and chronic truancy is important to the community
A Community Accountability Board (CAB) was established to formally address truancy issues and allow for collaboration among parents, schools and local social service agencies.  To help promote attendance and deter unexcused absence from school, District 65, in partnership with the City of Evanston and the Evanston Township High School, entered into an intergovernmental agreement. The intergovernmental agreement complements the Community Accountability Truancy Program, adopted July of 2010. The goal is to improve attendance through quick intervention and supports for students with chronic truancy issues.

hronic truants are defined as students who have unexcused absences of 5% or more of the previous 180 school days.

he District 65 Board of Education approved the recommended agreement in August, following District 202’s approval in July.

he Intergovernmental Agreement and Community Accountability Truancy Program documents are attached.
