With assistance of the City Traffic Engineer and Evanston Police Department, many School Walk Routes were updated in 2011.
Suggested bike/walk routes are available for viewing at school or find your school name on the right and click to view or download the information.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to view the suggest route and extend it to your home.
Please practice the route and safety information with young children.
Show your child where each street should be crossed.
Help them learn on which side of the street to walk.
Teach children why it is important to cross at the cross walk.
Practice crossing and how to look for oncoming traffic – left, right and then left
how to watch for turning bicycles, what to do at traffic signs and signals
what to do at entrances to alleys or driveways and at railroad crossing
why it is important to obey school crossing guards and school patrol members
which stoplights to watch when crossing the street and the importance of watching checking for traffic even if the light is green or there is a “walk” signal
what the flashing lights or gates at a railroad crossing mean
Model safe walking habits by obeying all crossing signals.
If you drive your child to school:
- Slow down! Travel with caution and obey all posted signs in school zones
- Try parking a few blocks away and walk to school to practice safe walking habits with your child.
- Teach your child how to use the street curbside adjacent to the school for pick up and drop off.
