About D65

Into_Their_Own_Light.jpgDistrict 65 is a pre-K through 8th grade school district serving more than 7,000 students from the City of Evanston and a small neighboring section of the Village of Skokie, Illinois.
The District is a member in good standing with the National School Board Association (NSBA), Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB), the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN), the Consortium for Educational Change (CEC) which is affiliated with the Illinois Education Association and works to improve student learning and achievement, and the local Joint Legislative Task Force (JLTF).  District 65 does not engage in direct lobbying efforts but is a member of Ed-Red Illinois, an advocate for local suburban districts in legislative matters related to education.
District 65 is an award-winning school system, many schools having been named among top State schools as reported in a Chicago Sun-Times poll.  District 65 schools are recognized for state-of-the art technology, and often sought out as demonstration sites for other districts. Several schools were identified by the state as demonstration sites for legislators and others to visit and see an effective implementation of the behavior intervention model that supports recognition and rewards for positive behaviors (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports -PBIS).
Administrators and teachers in District 65 are often sought out or selected by local, state, and national organizations to share their expertise and skill with colleagues at well-recognized educational conferences and workshops.
Residents can send their children to a local attendance-area school, may apply to attend another attendance-area school on permissive transfer, or may apply to attend one of the magnet schools or programs. All District 65 schools offer the same curriculum, use the same texts and materials, and are taught by highly-qualified educational professionals. All District 65 students have access to advanced technologies that enrich and support teaching and learning. Attendance area boundaries are shown on maps available on the web at [Link]http://www.district65.net/parentsandstudents/Maps.
Elementary Schools
Attendance-area elementary schools offer classes for grades K-5. These schools generally are close to the child’s residence. In some cases, transportation is necessary because of identified hazardous crossings or for distance between school and child’s home.

Middle Schools
Attendance-area middle schools offer classes for grades 6-8. Each middle school has a feeder pattern associated with identified elementary schools. Most middle school students walk or use public transportation to and from school.

Magnet Schools
District 65's magnet schools are K-8 buildings. They offer a school environment that is different than the K-5 or middle school experience. The magnet schools are available by application and random selection for children across the entire Evanston/Skokie School District 65 community.  Each magnet school has a focus to attract children and families. More information about the magnet schools is available on the Dr. Bessie Rhodes or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School web sites. Selections to attend magnet schools are random, but include certain preferences for families with siblings in the program/school and for families who live within certain prescribed boundaries in proximity to the school location.

Magnet Programs
There are two elementary magnet programs in District 65: a Two-Way Immersion (or TWI) program and the African Centered Curriculum (ACC) program. Selections to attend a magnet program are random, but preference is given for families in the attendance-area.
In the TWI program, the curriculum is enriched with Spanish-foreign language and culture. Spanish is the predominant teaching language in the earliest grades. This gradually transitions to more English for native Spanish speakers as they matriculate through the program. Native Spanish-speakers are tested for their bilingual education placement. Native English-speakers may apply to be part of the TWI program at Dawes, Dewey, Oakton, Washington or Willard School.
In the ACC program, the curriculum is enriched with lessons that introduce students to traditions and history of the African Diaspora using culturally-responsive materials and instructional strategies that build an understanding and sense of pride in the heritage of these peoples and their successes.
In all District 65 schools, families find
·      caring adults who genuinely want what is best for children
·      highly qualified teachers, most with a Master's Degree and above
·      engaging curriculum
·      a diverse student population
·      low student-teacher ratios and class sizes lower than state averages
·      instructional technology tools that enrich the curriculum
·      opportunities in the fine arts, clubs and more.
