New School-Referendum Ad Hoc Committee
On Monday, December 6, 2010 the District 65 Board of Education established the New School-Referendum Committee comprised of three board members and a number of community members. Katie Bailey, Jerome Summers and Kim Weaver agreed to serve as the board representatives to the committee. The committee will be chaired by Ms. Bailey and Mr. Summers.
Charge:
Determine the feasibility for building a new school based on space needs and community interest and support.
Tasks (administrative or consultant role with direction from the committee):
In order to proceed, there are a number of questions that must be addressed.
The administration, working with direction from the committee, will develop:
.Review of space needs – now and five years out – based on Kasarda projections.
.Outline of the history of this discussion (why is the committee being formed and what is the history of the fifth ward school)
.Review educational data
.Survey of potential attendance area families to determine interest, support and current educational experience
.At least one community forum to hear from the public
.Design of curriculum and program options
.Attendance options for a new school
.Location options – (including building a new school, leasing space or developing shared options).
.Funding and governing options (including implications of a charter school)
.Financing options and if we proceed,
.The Referendum question(s) and the referendum committee make up

.Meeting Schedule and Timeline
The committee is scheduled to meet on Thursdays from 7 to 9 pm. Meetings are open to the public. Observers are welcome. The following tentative meeting schedule is subject to change.
