As part of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, school districts that participate in the National School Lunch and/or School Breakfast Program are required to have a local wellness policy that promotes student health and addresses concerns about childhood obesity. The Board-adopted wellness policy (School Board Policy 6:50) is intended to create a healthier school environment via improved nutrition education, healthier food services, and improved physical activity offerings. Success requires active participation of several stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, students, and parents. The challenges that face implementation continue to include: time to fit nutrition curriculum into the instructional day, new curricular resources such as nutrition materials and gym equipment, the potential loss of revenue for food service, and getting stakeholders invested in the task of creating a healthier school environment.

The District 65 Wellness Council was originally formed in 2005. The Council is chaired by Mary Larson, RN,BSN,IL CSN and meets October through May.  It is comprised of members from each school and the District administration.

The Wellness Council has been responsible for promoting health and wellness, helpings to ensure that each school establishes its own local wellness team.  This has been accomplished through the development of informational brochures, by sponsoring wellness activities, and through the promotion of health and wellness initiatives across the district.  Wellness Council activities include:

Development of a Wellness Brochure for faculty and families with ideas about how to promote health and wellness at home and school

Hosting a Wellness Slogan Contest – students submitted poster art and slogans.  The winning slogan: Health is Wealth

Annual staff and student wellness challenges are organized districtwide and/or at individual schools to help keep the health and wellness initiative at the forefront.

Completion of the School Wellness Handbook

Establishment of Wellness Goals

Began (in 2009) to inventory effective implementation of wellness policy objectives by individual school wellness teams.
