health is wealth.jpgAs part of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, school districts that participate in the National School Lunch and/or School Breakfast Program are required to have a local wellness policy that promotes student health and addresses concerns about childhood obesity. The Board-adopted wellness policy (School Board Policy 6:50  0650 School Wellness Revised 3_26_12.pdf ) is intended to create a healthier school environment via improved nutrition education, healthier food services, and improved physical activity offerings. Success requires active participation of several stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, students, and parents. The challenges that face implementation continue to include: time to fit nutrition curriculum into the instructional day, new curricular resources such as nutrition materials and gym equipment, the potential loss of revenue for food and nutrition service, and getting stakeholders invested in the task of creating a healthier school environment was originally formed in 2005. The Council is co-chaired by Mary Larson, RN,BSN,IL CSN and and Jordan Ryan, RD, SNS meets October through May.  It is comprised of members from each school and the District administration.
The Wellness Council has been responsible for promoting health and wellness, helping ensure that each school establishes its own local wellness team.  This has been accomplished through informational brochures, sponsoring wellness activities, and promotion of health and wellness activities for faculty and families with ideas about how to promote health and wellness at home and school, including:
  • Wellness Brochure:   WellnessBrochure2012_13.pdf  en español
  • Establishing school wellness teams
  • Hosting a Wellness Slogan Contest for students. The winning slogan: Health is Wealth
  • Establishing annual goals
  • Organizing districtwide and school-based staff and student wellness challenges
  • Issuing and analyzing staff and student surveys
  • Presenting annual wellness updates to the Board of Education
